Job opening: Scientist Bioinformatics

We are seeking a highly motivated Bioinformatician that is keen to make a difference in the life of patients. We are looking for the second member of our growing bioinformatics team, where you’ll be working with 3D images, dose-response curves, and clinical datasets. At VitroScan, we receive fresh cancer patient samples, and we test which treatments the sample is sensitive to. We’re looking for someone to help us work with this data. There is a broad range of (bio)informatics activities, so we can tailor this role to a variety of candidates.

Our platform uses 3D microscopy imaging, so performing and improving image analysis through classical computer vision and modern deep-learning methods could be a substantial part of this role.

If your interests lean towards data science, we can offer many opportunities to use statistical and machine learning approaches for the development of predictive algorithms for our diagnostic drug testing services. This type of work also includes integration of relevant external biological and clinical information into our databases. For these types of candidates, we would prefer to see scientific publications or other evidence of involvement analyses projects to demonstrate competence.

For the more programming-oriented candidates: we are investing in improving our workflows and technology, so you could be involved in the development of data / cloud infrastructure, internal tooling, workflows, automations, and web interfaces. In such cases, our ideal candidate has a keen eye to spot opportunities for automation and has experience developing workflows or software and integrating those reliably into a production setting.

You will be expected to have your own responsibilities in the team of (bio)informaticians and leverage your expertise to maximize the value of VitroScan predictive testing portfolio. Required qualifications:

  • MS or Ph.D. in Bioinformatics, Genomics, Computer Science or related discipline
  • Proven experience in programming, preferably in Python
  • Experience with SQL
  • Strong interpersonal, presentation, written and oral communication skills to convey concepts and advise on relevant tools to (non-) specialists.

Desired qualifications:

  • - Background in biomedical science, ideally oncology
  • - Experience in microscope imaging and image analysis
  • - Demonstrable experience in writing high quality software (automated testing, documentation, etc.
  • - Experience with modern bioinformatics workflow managers (snakemake, nextflow, prefect)
  • - Experience in statistics, machine learning and deep-learning, including results communication and data visualisations.
